House in a quarry
Set in Bungenäs on the Swedish island of Gotland, House ST2 is our third completed architectural project. Once a military outpost and limestone quarry, the site is marked by exposed rock and rugged terrain.
The starting point was a site with a strong identity and a brief built around contrasting ideas: restrained concrete environments and a more playful, personal expression. Instead of placing the house on a rocky ridge to capture the views, we chose to build on the opposite side of the plot, allowing the ridge to shelter a courtyard between the rock and the building. Inside, an 85 mm board, taken from the timber formwork of the area’s old bunkers, sets a quiet rhythm through the joinery, doors and panelling. A long concrete table extends from the kitchen into the courtyard, connecting indoors and out.
